Theft of Red Telephone Wire from Prime Minister's Office, Accused Ranjan Chandra Granted Bail

A court has granted bail to Ranjan Chandra, one of the accused in the case involving the theft of copper wire from the red telephone connection of the Prime Minister's Office. The incident, which occurred between May 22 and June 1, involved the stealing of approximately 110 meters of BTCL's copper wire from the Secretariat premises.

Dhaka Metropolitan Court, June 5, 2026 Photo: Prothom Alo The court has granted the bail application of Ranjan Chandra (26) in a case filed at Shahbagh Police Station regarding the theft of copper wire from the red telephone connection of the Prime Minister's Office located in the Secretariat. After a hearing on Thursday, the court of Dhaka Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge-6, Md. Sadekin Habib, granted bail to the accused on a bond of 10,000 Taka.

Parimal Chandra Barman, the lawyer for the accused, confirmed the matter to Prothom Alo. Earlier last month, two other accused in this case were also granted bail.

According to the case statement, BTCL's copper wire was stolen from the roofs of old buildings 1, 2, and 3 of the Bangladesh Secretariat at any time between 10 AM on May 22 and 10 AM on June 1. The stolen government cable was approximately 110 meters long and its market value was about 1 lakh 5 thousand Taka.

In connection with this incident, Md. Faisal Kabir, Junior Assistant Manager (Technical) of BTCL, filed a theft case at Shahbagh Police Station. During the investigation of the case, with the help of CCTV footage and information technology, police arrested outsourcing worker Ranjan Chandra (26) and scrap dealer Rizakul Islam from the Secretariat area on June 4. The following day, the court granted them a five-day remand.

Police stated that Ranjan confessed to the theft during initial interrogation. He extracted copper from the stolen cable and sold it to a scrap shop named 'M/s Bhai Bhai Traders' in front of Dhaka University's Ekushey Hall. Based on information provided by Ranjan, Mahabub Hasan was arrested as the buyer of the stolen copper. Since then, these three accused have been in jail.
