Now, in solidarity with him, four more fellow artists of Ed Sheeran have announced their withdrawal from the tour.
Among them are Billie Eilish's brother and musician Finneas, Irish singer Aaron Ro, Danish band Lukas Graham, and Irish folk music group Beoga.
The incident originated on September 4 at Ed Sheeran's concert at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, USA. There, as a guest artist, Macklemore took to the stage and chanted 'Free Palestine' in support of Palestine. He then performed his protest song 'Hind's Hall'. Video footage of the destruction in Gaza was also shown during the song.
Subsequently, Macklemore was dropped from the tour's subsequent events. Ed Sheeran later stated on social media that the decision was not his.
According to him, the decision to remove Macklemore was made after discussions with the tour organizers and the respective venues.
Sheeran further stated that he does not wish to engage in public debate regarding Gaza. While he has personal opinions on the conflict, the British star also mentioned his decision not to use his music stage as a platform for political debate. At the same time, he noted that he respects Macklemore's courage to speak up for his beliefs.
Within hours of Sheeran's statement, one by one, announcements were made to withdraw from the tour.
