New Antivenom for Snakebites, Could Be a Game-Changer

For a long time, doctors had limited options to save people affected by snake venom. Now, scientists from India and Denmark have offered new hope by developing an antivenom effective against the venom of various cobra species in India. Researchers believe this treatment could significantly reduce snakebite deaths worldwide if successful.

The type of venom also varies depending on the species of venomous snake. Therefore, it is difficult to combat all types of venom with a single antivenom. Now, scientists from India and Denmark have offered new hope in solving this problem. They have developed an antivenom that can work against the venom of various cobra species in India. Researchers believe that if this treatment method is successful, the number of snakebite deaths worldwide could be significantly reduced.

The research was published last Saturday (September 12) in the US journal 'Science Translational Medicine'. It states that the new antivenom is made from five types of small antibody fragments or nanobodies. In tests, it proved highly effective in neutralizing the venom of spectacled cobra, monocled cobra, and two species of Indian king cobra.

It is estimated that nearly 50,000 people die from snakebites in India alone each year. This number is the highest in the world. The type of venom also varies depending on the snake species. Some venoms affect the nervous system, while others damage blood or various body tissues. Therefore, it is difficult to create a single antivenom against all types of venom.

Antivenoms used in hospitals also have several limitations. There can be variations in the effectiveness of antivenoms produced at different times. Additionally, they have side effects. Furthermore, they do not work equally against the venom of all snake species.
