For a month, India's Adani power plant had been producing electricity on a limited scale due to a coal shortage. Amidst this situation, around 12 AM last Wednesday, one unit of the power plant shut down due to a technical fault. This further reduced production, leading to an increase in load shedding in the country. After restarting the closed unit from last Sunday, they had increased production since noon. However, since this morning, supply has started to decrease again.
According to Power Grid Company PLC data at 3 PM on Monday (September 13), Adani supplied 1472 megawatts of electricity during Monday evening peak hours. They supplied close to 1500 megawatts of electricity until 8 AM today. Subsequently, data showed 1214 megawatts of electricity supplied at 9 AM, 1004 megawatts at 10 AM, and 932 megawatts at 11 AM.
Md. Zahurul Islam, Member (Production) of the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB), told Jago News, “The reason for the decrease is unknown. No such information has reached us yet. We need to investigate whether there is a mechanical fault or any other reason.”
However, even before Adani's power supply increased on Sunday, a unit of the Rampal power plant in Bagerhat shut down due to technical reasons around 11:30 AM. This reduced the plant's power generation capacity by half.
The coal-fired Rampal power plant, built under a joint venture between India and Bangladesh, had previously reduced production due to a coal shortage. Now, there is a coal reserve. Production was over 1,100 megawatts. With the sudden shutdown of one unit, its production has fallen below 600 megawatts.
