A unique initiative has been undertaken in Jhenaidah to protect the balance of nature and combat the increasing risk of lightning strikes. Through the innovative initiative of Zahir Raihan, a national award-winning environmental activist, thousands of palm seeds have been planted on both sides of various rural roads in Jhenaidah Sadar Upazila. The main objective of this noble program is to prevent lightning strikes naturally and to green the environment, which is considered extremely important in the context of current climate change.
Most recently, on September 9, at noon, approximately five hundred and fifty palm seeds were planted along both sides of a nearly three-kilometer-long rural path in the Chandipur-Berashula field of Ganna Union, Jhenaidah Sadar Upazila. People of all ages, from young to middle-aged, spontaneously participated in this program. The presence of local farmers, teachers, and people from various professions transformed this eco-friendly initiative into a festive event. The organizers stated that not only in this one location but also in various high-risk areas, at least seven thousand palm seeds have been planted along approximately ten kilometers of roads so far, which is part of Zahir Raihan's dedicated efforts in environmental protection.
Environmental activist Zahir Raihan regularly plants palm seeds alongside various roads with the help of young people. In addition to planting palm seeds, he also conducts tree planting and sapling distribution programs for other species. His continuous efforts are inspiring the local community to protect the environment and envisioning a green and safe future. According to him, everyone should work for the welfare of society and people out of social responsibility, and this initiative is just a small endeavor in that direction.
During an on-site inspection of the palm seed planting activities at Shankarpur Chandipur field, a captivating scene unfolded. People of all ages, from young to middle-aged, participated in groups. Some were measuring the correct distance between trees with jute sticks, some were busy digging soil with spades, while others were pushing vans loaded with palm seeds to their designated spots. Through everyone's spontaneous participation and collective effort, palm seeds were planted in rows along the entire two-kilometer path, creating an extraordinary example of social solidarity.
Pedestrian Ekramul Kabir highly praised Zahir Raihan's initiative, stating, “In this era of deforestation, Zahir Raihan's love for nature is truly a great example.” He further added that he calls upon people from all walks of life to follow Zahir Raihan's noble initiative to combat the harmful effects of climate change and build a green Earth. According to him, such initiatives can ensure a healthy and safe environment for future generations.
Local social worker Nahid Hossain highlighted the multifaceted benefits of palm trees, stating, “When palm trees grow large, we will get shade from the intense sun. We will be able to eat their fruits and drink their sap. Additionally, palm trees will help protect us from lightning strikes.” His comment underscores the environmental and practical importance of palm trees, further enhancing the significance of this planting program. Palm trees not only prevent lightning but also play a crucial role in enhancing natural beauty, creating bird habitats, and preventing soil erosion.
Regarding the inspiration behind his initiative, Zahir Raihan said, “I am carrying out this program to the best of my ability with the aim of preventing farmers from losing their lives due to lightning.” He firmly believes that it is everyone's duty to work for society and people. His humanitarian and eco-friendly initiative has become an inspiration not only for Jhenaidah but for the entire country, reaffirming the importance of individual and collective efforts in environmental protection.
