Shafiul Islam said in the National Parliament that although there are adequate fertilizer reserves on paper, farmers are lamenting a severe fertilizer crisis at the field level due to a lack of proper management.
Raising allegations of an artificial fertilizer crisis, irregularities, and a 10 to 12 lakh taka trade in dealer appointments, he urged strict monitoring at the dealer level and ensuring a fair distribution system even before the Boro season.
The MP from the 11-party alliance made these remarks on Wednesday (September 9) while participating in a discussion under Rule 68, chaired by Deputy Speaker Kawsar Kamal in the National Parliament.
Citing information from various newspaper reports, Shafiul Islam said, ‘Prothom Alo's report states that farmers are not getting fertilizer even by paying more than the fair price. This is not a report by Jamaat or any opposition 'bot army'. Amidst the fertilizer crisis, the minister's personal godown is full. Even though the government has fertilizer reserves, the syndrome of 2001-2006 is being seen again, when farmers had to risk their lives under gunfire for a bag of fertilizer. Reports have been published that six out of the country's seven state-owned fertilizer factories are closed. Maasranga News has reported about farmers blocking roads in Jhenaidah demanding fertilizer. If the local people turn against you, if farmers are incited against you, then one must understand that the actual events are true, and that is what has happened in reality.'
