EU Sanctions 'Symbol of Honor': Israeli Settlers Ignore Global Condemnation

Israeli settlers in the West Bank have rejected European Union (EU) sanctions, calling them a 'symbol of honor'. Critics argue these measures are failing to halt escalating violence against Palestinians and settlement expansion, which enjoys high-level support from the Israeli state.

When the European Union (EU) imposed its latest sanctions against Israeli settler groups and their leaders, groups like Regavim, co-founded by Israel's Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, welcomed these measures as a 'symbol of honor'. This clearly illustrates the ongoing tension in the West Bank and the defiant attitude of Israeli settlers towards international law. Despite international condemnation, these groups appear determined to continue their activities.

Another influential figure targeted by the sanctions, Daniela Weiss, whose Nachala movement has held conferences planning settlement expansion on the Gaza border, also dismissed these European penalties as 'ridiculous' and 'trivial'. This is not merely a personal reaction but indicates a broader trend within a segment of Israeli society to disregard international pressure. This attitude poses a significant challenge for the international community, as their actions are unable to effectively influence the settlers' activities.

A total of four entities and three individuals have been brought under EU sanctions, notably including Weiss, Regavim and its director Meir Deutsch, and the Amana cooperative. Amana provides logistical and financial support to settlers in the West Bank. Even high-ranking government officials have been targeted by recent Western sanctions. Israel's Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, a key figure in the settler movement, has been sanctioned by the UK, Canada, and several other countries for allegedly supporting or enabling violence in the West Bank. This makes it clear that the settlement project receives support from the highest levels of the Israeli state.

The indifferent reaction from the individuals and entities targeted by the sanctions suggests that these EU measures will not be very effective in halting settlement expansion or holding individuals accountable for the escalating violence against Palestinians. Analysts say these largely toothless measures could, on the contrary, become a source of domestic prestige for their leaders, as these hardline settlers are not expected to spend their summer holidays in Paris or London, meaning the sanctions will have little personal impact on their lives. Instead, a wave of violence is more likely to continue in the West Bank with the silent support of the government.

According to many activists and observers who spoke with Al Jazeera, the EU's focus on group and individual 'violations' has failed to highlight the scale of organized settler attacks or the depth of state and societal support they receive. They believe the root cause of the problem lies in the policies of the Israeli state and the mentality within a large segment of society that legitimizes settlement, which is far more extensive than just individual or group crimes.

Since the Hamas-led attacks in October 2023, the United Nations and human rights observers have documented systematic and deadly settler attacks in areas like the South Hebron Hills. Residents of villages such as Susiya and Umm al-Khair have been killed or seriously injured in collective assaults. These incidents reveal a horrifying picture of how widespread settler violence against Palestinians has become.

In the northern West Bank, Palestinian villagers around Nablus and Ramallah have witnessed their homes, vehicles, and olive groves being set ablaze during nighttime settler raids. Entire Bedouin herding communities in the Jordan Valley have been forcibly displaced due to constant threats and violence. Such incidents are not merely isolated acts of violence but part of a well-planned effort to expand settler occupation by expelling Palestinians from their land.

All these incidents highlight the depth and widespread nature of settler activities, which, according to local people, enjoy the direct support of the Israeli government. The situation has worsened since October (2023), posing a serious concern for the international community. Despite international pressure, the Israeli government and settlers are unwilling to change their policies, which stands as a major obstacle to establishing lasting peace in the Middle East.
