DSHE Directs Nationwide Educational Institutions to Organize Cultural Competitions for Nazrul Year Celebration

The Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education (DSHE) has instructed all educational institutions across the country to organize cultural competitions in observance of 'Nazrul Year,' held in memory of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam. This directive was issued through a letter on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, and will apply to all levels of educational institutions under DSHE. The primary objective of this initiative is to foster a deep connection between students and the national poet's literature and ethos, while also highlighting the country's rich cultural heritage.

The letter issued by DSHE clearly states that educational institutions must conduct these cultural competitions following the guidelines formulated and prescribed by the Ministry of Cultural Affairs. Copies of this directive have been sent to all regional directors of DSHE, deputy directors of secondary education branches, and all district education officers across the country. This ensures that the instruction reaches every educational institution at the grassroots level correctly and that the implementation process is well-organized.

Kazi Nazrul Islam, known as our National Poet, made an extraordinary contribution to Bengali literature and culture through his life and work. His messages of rebellion, love, equality, and humanism remain relevant and inspiring today. The observance of 'Nazrul Year' will create an opportunity to present his timeless creations and revolutionary life to the new generation. These competitions will play a significant role in fostering respect for the national poet, patriotism, and cultural awareness among students.

In these school-based cultural competitions, students will have the opportunity to participate in various categories including recitation, music, dance, drawing, essay writing, and debate. This will not only help develop their latent talents but also provide an opportunity to gain deep knowledge about Kazi Nazrul Islam's life and philosophy. Such events will contribute not only to students' academic development but also to the cultivation of their intellect and creativity, which is an integral part of a comprehensive education system.

Adhering to the guidelines of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs while organizing the competitions is extremely important. This is because it will ensure that the quality, subject matter, and judging process of the competitions follow a specific standard. It will ensure that the competitions are purposeful and educational, where students can learn about various aspects of national culture and find a structured platform to express themselves. Furthermore, these guidelines will help maintain transparency and impartiality in organizing the competitions.

It is hoped that this initiative will create a festive atmosphere in educational institutions. Students will not only compete with each other but also learn from one another. By showing this special respect to the national poet, the country's cultural awakening will be further invigorated, and the younger generation's appreciation for indigenous culture and heritage will grow. This is not merely a competition but a collective celebration of national consciousness.

The Directorate of Education believes that the holistic development of students is crucial not just through textbook-based studies, but also through cultural activities. Cultural practice improves students' mental health, enhances their social skills, and aids in the formation of values. These cultural competitions, organized for Nazrul Year, will foster a positive attitude among students and instill deep respect for national history and heritage.

Finally, such initiatives will have a positive impact on Bangladesh's education system. It will help raise awareness among students about nationalism and cultural identity. These competitions, organized in memory of great personalities like Kazi Nazrul Islam, will inspire future generations to stay connected to their roots and to embrace and cherish the country's rich cultural heritage.
