This significant announcement was made at the official recognition and felicitation ceremony for selected researchers, innovators, and entrepreneurs under the 'Skills for Industry Competitiveness and Innovation Program,' held at Hotel InterContinental in the capital.
Organized under the supervision of the Finance Division of the Ministry of Finance, this special event is a unique government initiative aimed at enhancing the capacity of the industrial sector and encouraging industry-based research and innovation. For the first time in the country's history, such a large platform has been created to directly connect researchers with industrial establishments, which is expected to open new horizons for industrialization. Attending as the chief guest, the Finance Minister highlighted the importance of innovation and skills in addressing the country's economic challenges. In his speech, he discussed in detail Bangladesh's position in the current global economic situation and strategies for overcoming it.
Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury candidly acknowledged the economic challenges facing the current government in his speech. He stated, "We have inherited a fragile economy, and the work to restore it is in full swing. A clear path is being forged to emerge from this situation." The Finance Minister further added that the government is currently dealing with an emergency situation where swift and effective measures are imperative. These measures include various economic reforms, deregulation, formulation of contemporary policies, and providing new incentives for industry and trade. He expressed strong confidence that the benefits of these initiatives will gradually be reflected in the country's economy.
The Minister emphasized that the adopted economic reforms will not only help overcome the current crisis but also contribute to building a strong and stable economic foundation for the future. He particularly stressed the importance of job creation and announced that extensive initiatives have been taken to establish skill development centers across the country. These centers will provide opportunities for young and unemployed populations to acquire necessary skills, which will enhance their employment prospects and positively impact the national economy. The Finance Minister expressed hope that through the combined efforts of the government and the private sector, Bangladesh's economy will move towards a developed and prosperous future.
The main highlight of the event was the awarding of funds and prizes to 12 selected researchers and entrepreneurs for innovative research. Financial assistance ranging from BDT 70 lakh to BDT 2.5 crore has been provided to utilize their research in solving various industrial problems. In total, BDT 23 crore has been allocated for these 12 projects, marking a significant step to strengthen the country's innovation ecosystem. Md. Khairuzzaman Mazumder, Secretary of the Finance Division, and Mohammad Walid Hossain, Additional Secretary, were also present at the event. In his welcome speech, Mohammad Walid Hossain announced that a total of 123 projects were submitted for innovative industrial solutions, from which these 12 projects were selected through a rigorous vetting process.
Additional Secretary Mohammad Walid Hossain further explained that the researchers of each selected project had previously worked with the relevant industrial establishments, which made their concept papers more realistic and industry-specific. After one year of research, the innovative solutions from these projects will be directly implemented in industries. This approach, moving beyond mere research papers to practical application, will help increase industrial productivity and competitive capability. For example, these projects include diverse and effective innovations ranging from small cold storage units to technology for fish feed distribution machines and manufacturing packaging materials from discarded yarn, which will bring positive changes across various industrial sectors of the country.
