The 'Bangla QR' (Quick Response) service has initiated a groundbreaking transformation in Bangladesh's financial transaction system, playing a crucial role in realizing the country's aspiration for a digital economy or 'Cashless Bangladesh'. Launched under the supervision of Bangladesh Bank, this unified QR code system now sees daily transactions exceeding BDT 1.1 billion, setting a new milestone in the country's digital payment ecosystem. This success is not limited to the transaction volume alone but also demonstrates its widespread acceptance among both merchants and customers.
As a firm step to expand digital transactions and achieve financial inclusion, the central bank of the country, Bangladesh Bank, mandated all banks and Mobile Financial Services (MFS) providers to use the unified 'Bangla QR' code instead of their proprietary QR codes starting from July. As a result of this directive, the use of this method rapidly increased among buyers and service providers, driving the financial value of daily transactions to unprecedented heights within just a few weeks.
An analysis of Bangladesh Bank's latest updated data reveals a significant surge in both the number and financial value of transactions since the introduction of this new system. From July 1st to mid-August, the daily number of transactions nearly doubled, and the financial value of transactions increased almost threefold. While the average daily transaction count was 178,000 at the beginning of July, it rose to 303,000 as per last week's figures. Similarly, the daily transaction volume, which was approximately BDT 370 million at the beginning of July, has now astonishingly increased to BDT 1.1 billion.
One of the main reasons behind this unprecedented success is the increasing participation of merchants or sellers. The implementation of the 'One Country, One QR' policy has reduced the hassle for merchants of maintaining multiple QR codes. Consequently, the convenience of receiving payments quickly and easily has garnered widespread response among sellers. According to Bangladesh Bank data, within this short period, the number of merchants has grown from 1.6 million to nearly 3 million, which is clear evidence of their trust and interest in the digital transaction method.
The primary objective of the 'One Country, One QR' policy is to make the transaction process easier and more convenient for customers. Through this system, a customer can pay any merchant's bill using their preferred bank or MFS app. This has not only increased convenience for customers but also ensured interoperability among digital payment platforms, which is essential for building a cohesive and robust digital financial ecosystem.
Both public and private sector banks in the country are playing an active role in the successful implementation of this large-scale initiative. Alongside state-owned banks, private banks are also making significant contributions to promoting Bangla QR service and increasing its usage. Their combined efforts are helping to modernize and digitize the country's financial infrastructure, which will propel Bangladesh towards a completely cashless society in the future.
The success of Bangla QR is not merely a triumph for a specific transaction method; rather, it is a crucial step in Bangladesh's overall digital transformation journey. It demonstrates that significant positive changes can be brought about in the country's financial sector with the right policies and effective implementation strategies. This initiative is not only increasing financial transparency but also making transactions faster, safer, and more cost-effective for everyone, from small and medium enterprises to large corporations, which will have a long-term positive impact on the country's economic growth.
There are plans to further expand the scope of Bangla QR service in the future, ensuring even better services for customers and merchants by adding new features. This continuous progress is expected to further strengthen the country's digital economy and solidify Bangladesh's position within the global digital payment system.
