Police have recovered the throat-slit body of a gold merchant named Md. Abul Kalam Azad (50) from inside a jewelry shop in the Bhushir Mill area of Gazipur's Gachha Thana. On Sunday (August 23, 2026) morning, the tragic fate of Abul Kalam Azad, owner of the local 'Sadia Jewelers', came to light, creating a stir throughout the area. Preliminary investigations suggest it was a premeditated murder, but police are working diligently to identify the motive and those involved.
According to police and local sources, Abul Kalam Azad went to sleep at his business establishment on Friday night, as per his daily routine. He typically opened the shop in the morning to start his business activities. However, when the shop's shutter remained closed even after Saturday morning turned into noon, suspicion arose among other nearby shopkeepers. After waiting all day, their suspicion deepened further on Sunday morning, and eventually, a neighboring shopkeeper informed the matter by calling the national emergency service 999.
Upon receiving the information, Gachha Thana police quickly arrived at the scene. As police officers lifted the shop's shutter, they found Abul Kalam Azad's throat-slit body lying on the floor inside. This sight spread panic among all present. The body was soaked in blood, and the nature of the injuries indicated that he had been brutally murdered with a sharp weapon. Initially, no signs of ransacking or looting were observed inside the shop, which raised further questions about the motive behind the murder.
Belayet Hossain, Additional Police Commissioner of Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP), informed the media that a preliminary report (surat-e-hal) of the deceased Abul Kalam Azad's body has been prepared. Subsequently, the body was sent to the morgue of Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination. He further stated that police have already launched a vigorous investigation to uncover the reason for his murder and identify those involved in this brutal incident. Various aspects are being scrutinized, and circumstantial evidence is being collected.
Investigators initially believe that this could be the result of personal enmity or a premeditated crime. Since there were no initial signs of valuable items being looted from the shop, the murder might not have been solely for the purpose of robbery. However, police are working by considering all possibilities. Efforts are underway to identify the culprits by examining CCTV footage (if available) from the shop and the victim's mobile phone call records. Additionally, attempts are being made to uncover any potential conflicts by speaking with the victim's family and acquaintances.
Businessmen in the Bhushir Mill area have expressed deep sorrow over Abul Kalam Azad's death and simultaneously raised concerns about their own safety. They stated that Abul Kalam was known as a calm and gentle person, and they were unaware of any significant animosity he might have had with anyone. This brutal murder has created a sense of fear in the area, and locals have demanded the swift arrest and exemplary punishment of the culprits.
The police administration is conducting the investigation into this murder with utmost seriousness. The Gazipur Metropolitan Police has stated that they are determined to bring the perpetrators to justice. It is expected that more detailed information about the nature of the murder will be known once the post-mortem report is received. The main objective of the concerned authorities now is to unravel the mystery of this murder through a fair and impartial investigation and ensure appropriate justice for those involved.
