Law enforcement agencies have significantly bolstered security measures following email threats received by two foreign embassies located in crucial diplomatic areas of the capital, Dhaka, such as Baridhara and Gulshan. Since this incident, the security cordon around the entire diplomatic zone has been made even more impenetrable, conveying a clear message about ensuring the protection of foreign missions. Although these threats are initially suspected to be fake or scams, the concerned authorities are unwilling to take any risks as a precautionary measure.
Deputy Police Commissioner (ADC) Abu Khayer of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Diplomatic Security Division confirmed this information. He stated that the content of the threats was mentioned in emails received by the Chinese and Russian embassies. However, no specific information regarding the origin of these emails has yet been found. Mr. Khayer initially described these threats as "scams" or "fake," suggesting they could be the deliberate act of a mischievous group.
As per standard procedure, foreign embassies in Dhaka inform Bangladesh's Ministry of Foreign Affairs when such incidents occur. In this case, too, the concerned embassies notified the Ministry of Foreign Affairs about the threats. Subsequently, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs informed the Police Headquarters and the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) Unit. Based on this information, surveillance and patrols by law enforcement agencies have been intensified in the areas surrounding the embassies and, overall, within the diplomatic zone.
Although the police have not formally received any written complaint or general diary (GD) entry, this step to enhance security has been taken proactively. ADC Abu Khayer noted, "They (the embassies) did not inform us directly but rather informed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Even though I did not receive any formal directive, as soon as I became aware of the matter, our existing security arrangements were further strengthened." He added that while such threats are not considered serious, it is crucial to remain vigilant.
Meanwhile, as the issue of diplomatic security comes to the fore in places like Dhaka, vigorous diplomatic efforts are also underway on the international stage to de-escalate tensions between various countries. Iran, in particular, is playing a significant role in resolving the ongoing instability in the Middle East. In this context, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held separate telephone conversations with the Foreign Ministers of Oman and Egypt, discussing the regional situation and strategies for reducing tensions.
Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that Mr. Araghchi discussed "suitable conditions for resuming talks" and important issues concerning the security of maritime navigation in the Strait of Hormuz with Oman's Foreign Minister, Sayyid Badr Al Busaidi. It is noteworthy that Oman is known as a key mediator in the ongoing nuclear deal discussions between Iran and the United States. Although dialogue between the two countries is currently suspended, this discussion between Iran and Oman is believed to pave the way for potential future talks.
Similarly, in a telephone conversation with Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Aty, Iranian Foreign Minister Mr. Araghchi discussed the current situation in the Persian Gulf and the Red Sea, as well as the latest diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions in the region. These phone calls took place at a time when Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian emphasized the swift resolution of a "neither war nor peace" situation. He mentioned keeping the path open for discussions "with logic, even if by force," which indicates Iran's commitment to regional peace and stability.
Thus, while Bangladesh is exercising utmost caution to ensure the security of its diplomatic missions, various countries on the international stage are continuously pursuing diplomatic efforts to resolve regional conflicts and tensions. Although these two streams of events are geographically distinct, they reflect the universal aspiration for maintaining peace and stability worldwide. In the global context, each country's security and diplomatic initiatives are intricately linked, forming part of the complex geopolitical reality of the present world.
