A sensational incident has occurred in Sundarganj, Gaibandha, where a marriage of a person who died in 2024 has allegedly been newly registered in 2026. The accusation is directed at local Nikah Registrar (Kazi) Abdul Hai, which raises serious questions about the Nikahnama (marriage contract) and the marriage registration process. The deceased's father, Hossain Ali, claims to have fallen victim to such an unprecedented incident when he went to request a duplicate copy of his son's old marriage certificate.
According to the death certificate obtained from Tarapur Union Parishad, Matiar Rahman committed suicide by hanging himself on April 17, 2024. Following his untimely death, the family was grief-stricken, and his wife, Sharmin Akter, also remarried elsewhere. In such circumstances, the allegation of newly registering Matiar Rahman's marriage has sparked widespread discussion among locals and raised questions about the Kazi's integrity.
Local sources indicate that the deceased Matiar Rahman had a family-arranged marriage with Sharmin Akter, daughter of Nayeb Ali from Latshala village, Tarapur Union. After Matiar Rahman's death, Sharmin Akter remarried elsewhere, which is a normal process according to social customs. However, in this context, the allegation of newly registering a marriage in the name of a deceased person has further complicated the situation.
Matiar Rahman's father, Hossain Ali, has alleged that he approached the concerned Kazi Abdul Hai because he needed a duplicate copy of his son's previous marriage Nikahnama. He claims that instead of providing a duplicate copy of the old registration, Kazi Abdul Hai took a large sum of money and newly registered the marriage of the deceased Matiar Rahman and Sharmin Akter on August 8, 2026, which is completely illegal and fraudulent.
After the matter came to light and questions were raised about the Kazi's actions, he allegedly provided another duplicate copy, this time mentioning the date February 7, 2024. The allegation of having Nikahnama or registration documents with two different dates for the same marriage has created widespread sensation locally and further clarified the Kazi's fraudulent activity.
Expressing his anger, Hossain Ali said, 'My son died in 2024. His marriage with Sharmin was arranged by the family. I only asked for a copy of the old marriage. But the Kazi took money and newly registered the marriage in 2026, which is unacceptable in any way.' He strongly demanded a fair investigation into the incident, verifying the Kazi's original register, the details of the previous marriage, and the registration entry of August 8, 2026, and taking necessary action.
When asked about the allegations, Nikah Registrar Abdul Hai denied all of them. He stated, 'The allegation of newly registering the marriage of the deceased Matiar Rahman on August 8, 2026, is completely false and baseless. I have not taken money from anyone to do such a thing. The information in my register has been done according to the rules. If necessary, verifying the relevant register and documents will reveal the truth.' While he claims innocence, the seriousness of the allegations against him is by no means diminished.
Tarapur Union Parishad Chairman Aminul Islam stated in this regard, 'I know that Matiar died in 2024. Family members have also taken the death certificate from the Parishad.' His statement further strengthens the veracity of the allegations and makes the fraud accusation against the Kazi more credible.
Sundarganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Iffat Jahan Tuli commented on this serious allegation, 'There is no scope for such an act. However, the matter will be thoroughly investigated, and prompt action will be taken.' Such a firm stance by the administration offers a ray of hope to the victim's family and is expected to ensure fair justice in this incident. Officials have stated that after a full investigation of this incident, the real truth will be uncovered, and legal action will be taken against the guilty party.
