Drug Trafficking Under Guise of Passenger Transport on Dhaka-Chattogram Highway: Bus Driver-Helper Arrested with 9 Kg Cannabis

In a sensational incident of drug transportation under the guise of passenger movement, Highway Police conducted a raid in the Narayanganj section of the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway. During this operation, carried out based on secret information, nine kilograms of cannabis were recovered from an air-conditioned bus named 'Lal Sobuj'. Simultaneously, the police arrested the bus driver and helper for carrying the drugs. They were apprehended on Saturday morning (August 22, 2026) from the Kanchpur area of the Dhaka-bound lane of the highway, shedding new light on the drug trafficking network operating on the country's main road.

The arrested individuals are bus driver Fuad Uddin (36), son of Noor Nabi from Sonapur area of Noakhali district, and helper Md. Salauddin (22), son of the late Abdul Jabbar from the same district. Preliminary investigation suggests that they had been involved in heinous crimes like drug trafficking under the guise of passenger transport for a long time. Law enforcement agencies are trying to extract more information from them, which could help apprehend the masterminds of this drug syndicate. This incident once again proves that drug traffickers are employing new tactics to carry out their illegal activities.

Shamim Sheikh, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kanchpur Highway Police Station, informed the media that they had specific information about a large quantity of drugs being brought to Dhaka in a bus originating from Noakhali. Based on this information, a special checkpoint was set up in the Kanchpur area of the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway. When the suspicious 'Lal Sobuj' bus arrived there in the morning, it was stopped and searched. During this highly cautious search, nine kilograms of cannabis were cleverly hidden inside the passenger luggage compartments of the bus and subsequently recovered.

OC Shamim Sheikh further noted that drug traffickers were using the passenger luggage areas as a safe haven for transporting their illegal goods. They attempted to evade the eyes of law enforcement agencies by adopting such tactics, which is highly reprehensible. However, due to the vigilant monitoring of the Highway Police and the proper use of intelligence information, their nefarious attempt was foiled. Police suspect that both the driver and helper were active members of this drug trafficking syndicate.

The process of filing a case under the Narcotics Control Act against the arrested driver Fuad Uddin and helper Md. Salauddin is underway. Detailed information regarding whether they confessed to their involvement in this drug trade during initial interrogation has not been disclosed. However, the police stated that strict legal action would be taken against them, and investigations would continue to identify other members of this syndicate. This incident of drug trafficking is considered part of the ongoing efforts to protect the country's youth from the scourge of drugs.

As the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway is one of the country's major commercial routes, it is often used as a preferred path by drug traffickers. Previously, law enforcement agencies have arrested traffickers with large quantities of drugs on this highway at various times. Vigilant surveillance on the highway and increased activity by police and other agencies, aided by information technology, in identifying drug traffickers are playing a crucial role in suppressing such crimes.

Drugs are a terrible curse for society. The government and law enforcement agencies are working tirelessly to prevent their spread. Efforts are underway to dismantle drug trafficking networks through regular raids, intelligence surveillance, and strict enforcement in border areas. Such successful operations not only recover drugs but also create a sense of fear among drug traffickers and hinder their illegal activities.
