Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian announced on Friday (August 21, 2026) that the current time is highly suitable for ending the ongoing conflict with the United States. According to state media reports, in a speech delivered at a medical conference, he emphasized that Iran is currently in a position of 'strength and dignity' and that the war should be ended at this opportunity. His remarks come at a time when mixed messages regarding the conflict are emanating from both Tehran and Washington, further complicating the situation.

A partial ceasefire agreement, concluded in June, expired last Monday without any progress or renewal, leading to uncertainty about its future. Amidst this instability, Tehran has continued to impose strict restrictions on maritime cargo transit through the Strait of Hormuz, and in response, the United States is attempting to impose a 'blockade' on Iranian ports. These tit-for-tat actions by both sides have escalated regional tensions and are impacting international shipping routes.

This week, US President Donald Trump threatened to increase economic pressure on Iran. However, the United States conducts almost no business with this nation, which is one of the most heavily sanctioned in the world, raising questions about how much additional pressure can truly be applied. Just as Pezeshkian is hinting at peace talks, an Iranian military leader has threatened a 'crushing, punitive, and destructive response' if the United States attempts to further economically isolate Iran. Such contradictory statements indicate disagreements among Tehran's internal policymakers.

According to an IRNA report, President Pezeshkian further stated that the war must eventually end. He firmly stated, “It is better to end it today, because we are in a position of strength and dignity.” He claimed, “The whole world recognizes our victory and emphasizes that America has violated all rules by attacking our schools, hospitals, and infrastructure, and has become hated worldwide.” His statement is seen as an attempt to boost confidence among the Iranian people and strengthen Iran's moral stance against the United States on the international stage.

Pezeshkian also spoke about the 15-point Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between Iran and the United States in June. He firmly stated that this agreement in no way indicates Iran's defeat. He said, “They will not find a single clause in this agreement that suggests surrender. All commitments fall upon the other party.” His explanation highlights Tehran's own perspective on the terms of the agreement, which may differ from Washington's interpretation.

Although most commitments fall upon the United States, some parts of the 15 commitments also impose responsibilities on Iran. However, Tehran might argue that these commitments merely refer to agreeing to return to pre-war conditions. The most notable examples include maintaining duty-free commercial transit through the Strait of Hormuz, at least temporarily, and reaffirming that Iran will not acquire or develop nuclear weapons. Pezeshkian further told the doctors, “Under no circumstances will we bow to intimidation,” and that if necessary, Iran would resist “until its last breath.”

Days after making comments related to the Korean Peninsula and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, US President Donald Trump briefly turned his attention back to Iran on Wednesday evening. He threatened to launch “the most crushing economic campaign ever taken against any other country,” further inflaming the situation. These threats are part of the United States' ongoing strategy to increase international pressure on Iran, but there is widespread debate in international circles regarding the actual effectiveness and consequences of such harsh measures.
