The race for the 2026 Ballon d'Or, one of football's most prestigious awards, is slowly taking its final shape. Intense discussions and speculations have already begun among football fans and analysts about who will lift the coveted trophy on October 26. While several star names are circulating in the list of potential winners, players like Lionel Messi, Harry Kane, Kylian Mbappé, and Lamine Yamal are mentioned most frequently. Amidst this heated debate, German football legend and World Cup winner Lothar Matthäus has now expressed his considered opinion. His preferred choice might surprise many, as he has identified Harry Kane as the most deserving contender for this year's Ballon d'Or, placing him ahead of Messi, Mbappé, and Yamal.
According to the former German midfielder, the Ballon d'Or should not be determined by just one match, a tournament, or a few brilliant moments; instead, a player's unwavering and consistent performance throughout the entire season should be given the most weight. By this criterion, Matthäus believes Harry Kane is significantly ahead of others. He described Kane's recently concluded season with Bayern Munich as 'outstanding'. Alongside the English striker's individual performance, Bayern's two domestic title victories under his leadership also served as a strong argument in his favor. However, even more crucial for Matthäus was the absence of any significant dip in Kane's performance throughout the entire season.
According to Matthäus's analysis, Harry Kane maintained the same level of consistency from the beginning to the end of the season. His regular and effective impact in scoring goals and in the team's attack was remarkable. Matthäus firmly believes that this uninterrupted consistency has placed him ahead of other potential Ballon d'Or candidates. He thinks that a player can truly be called the best only when they deliver high-quality performances over a prolonged period. Kane has met that standard, which sets him apart from others.
However, a comparison between Kane and current football superstar Lionel Messi is inevitable. The Argentine maestro is also in the discussion for this year's Ballon d'Or. His outstanding performance and goal tally in the World Cup, alongside winning the US league with Inter Miami, have been part of Matthäus's discussion. But in Messi's case, the German legend highlighted an important point. According to him, the competitive standard of domestic football in the United States is not comparable to that of Europe's top leagues. Therefore, it is not appropriate to evaluate Messi's league performance in the same way as the performances of footballers playing in major European leagues. Additionally, Matthäus's analysis also included Messi's two penalty misses in the World Cup, although he did not deny that Messi's overall performance was extraordinary.
Matthäus also considers the young talent Lamine Yamal as one of the highly discussed candidates for the Ballon d'Or. Winning La Liga with Barcelona and subsequently the World Cup with Spain are considered strong arguments in Yamal's favor. However, Matthäus is reluctant to put him forward as the most deserving candidate for the Ballon d'Or based solely on team success. In his opinion, while Yamal has undoubtedly played brilliantly, he hasn't created such a massive gap in individual performance that would clearly put him ahead of the other candidates. Matthäus applied a similar assessment to Kylian Mbappé. Although Mbappé has the achievement of reaching the World Cup semi-finals with France, the German legend believes that his inability to win any major trophy with Real Madrid has somewhat impacted his candidacy.
Matthäus presented the same argument for Jude Bellingham. Although the English midfielder shone individually, Matthäus cannot place him ahead of Kane in terms of team success and season-long consistency. However, Matthäus also acknowledged some weaknesses in Harry Kane's candidacy. As captain of England, he could not lead his team to the World Cup final. Similarly, he could not reach the Champions League final with Bayern Munich. Since performing on the biggest stage and bringing success to the team are extremely important criteria for an award like the Ballon d'Or, this could be a significant argument against Kane.
But for Matthäus, these weaknesses are not enough to remove Kane from his preferred list. According to him, while not reaching two major finals is significant, Harry Kane's extraordinary consistency throughout the entire season and the overall impact of his play were so immense that they overshadowed these limitations. Matthäus firmly believes that Kane's comprehensive and uninterrupted performance has established him as the most suitable candidate to win the 2026 Ballon d'Or. This German legend's opinion has undoubtedly added a new dimension to the Ballon d'Or debate and further fueled discussions among football enthusiasts.
