The escalating global semiconductor chip shortage has created deep concern within the technology industry, with South Korean leading tech firm Samsung Electronics warning that the situation could extend until 2028. To tackle this unprecedented challenge, stabilize its supply chain, and ensure future production, Samsung is signing long-term supply agreements with the world's largest data center operators. Experts believe this strategic move could play a crucial role in mitigating volatility in the global chip market.
According to Samsung's second-quarter financial report, its semiconductor division achieved more than 250 times the operating profit compared to the same period last year. This was made possible by the intense demand and high prices for chips, once again proving the importance of chips in the global technology product market. Despite this massive profit, investors have expressed a degree of concern regarding the substantial investment in artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure across the technology sector.
The company stated that it has already completed supply agreements with the world's top five data center operators. Additionally, discussions for agreements with five other major companies are in their final stages. The primary objective of these contracts is to ensure a stable supply of chips for the next five years or more. These agreements include provisions for advance payments and minimum price guarantees, which Samsung authorities believe are crucial for reducing future investment risks.
Jejun Kim, Executive Vice President of Samsung's Memory Division, noted that almost all customers are currently interested in supply agreements spanning five years or more. This trend reflects market uncertainty and concerns about future supply. Samsung aims to bring approximately two-thirds of its total memory chip production under such long-term contracts, which will protect the company from market fluctuations and ensure a stable revenue stream.
However, despite strong financial results in the semiconductor division, investor concerns have not been entirely alleviated. After the report's release, Samsung's share price initially rose slightly but fell by 0.7 percent by the end of trading. Market analysts attribute this to the necessity of massive investments in artificial intelligence infrastructure within the technology sector and the apprehension of increasing competition from China in the future. These factors are expected to put pressure on Samsung's long-term profitability.
The impact of the chip shortage is also being observed in other Samsung divisions. Notably, due to rising chip prices, Samsung's mobile division incurred a loss of 700 billion won in the second quarter, marking its first loss in several quarters. This incident demonstrates how challenging a global supply chain crisis can be, even for a large and diversified technology company. The indispensability of chips in mobile production and their high cost are directly negatively impacting consumer product prices and the company's profitability.
Market analysts believe that while memory chips are currently Samsung's primary source of revenue, a future decrease in demand for chips in the artificial intelligence sector and increased competition from Chinese tech companies could create severe pressure on Samsung's profitability. For this reason, Samsung must not only increase production but also invest more in research and development to acquire new technologies and meet market demands.
