Fifteen-year-old batting prodigy Vaibhav Suryavanshi has received his maiden call-up to the Indian T20 international squad. The country's cricket board (BCCI) announced this in a statement on Saturday. He has been included in the squad for India's upcoming T20 series against Ireland and England, a significant milestone for the young cricketer. His selection has generated widespread discussion in cricket circles, as it is a rare occurrence for someone so young to get an opportunity in the national team.
The prodigy earned his national team spot after an outstanding season in the Indian Premier League (IPL). In this IPL season, Vaibhav topped the list of highest scorers with 776 runs in 16 matches. This performance included one century and five half-centuries, which is truly remarkable for a young cricketer. His aggressive batting and consistency quickly brought him into the limelight, helping him knock on the doors of the national team.
The left-handed opening batsman also broke Chris Gayle's record for the most sixes in a single IPL season, a testament to his destructive batting prowess. His remarkable performance for Rajasthan Royals earned him both the Most Valuable Player (MVP) and Best Emerging Player awards, making him the first player in IPL history to achieve this. Many had considered him worthy of playing in the senior T20 international squad ever since, and finally, those expectations have been met.
If Vaibhav Suryavanshi makes his debut in a match against Ireland or England, he will create history as the youngest player to play for the Indian men's senior team. He will surpass legendary Sachin Tendulkar, who debuted for India at the age of 16. This potential debut will not only be a personal achievement for Vaibhav but will also add a new chapter to the history of Indian cricket and serve as an inspiration for future generations.
Selection committee chairman Ajit Agarkar told reporters, “We've seen what he can do, he almost single-handedly carried Rajasthan Royals towards the playoffs.” He added, “Not just this season, he had a fantastic start, and maintaining that consistency in a highly competitive and high-pressure tournament is truly commendable. He is a game-changer, and we have high hopes for him. He has earned his spot.”
Agarkar also announced that Shreyas Iyer has been appointed as the new captain, replacing Suryakumar Yadav. Iyer has been given this responsibility primarily due to his captaincy skills, as he led Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title in 2024. His success has positioned him as a suitable candidate to lead the national team and has earned the trust of the selectors.
Iyer last played a T20 international match in December 2023. His experience as a captain is even more extensive, as he led Punjab Kings to be runners-up in 2025 and to the playoffs this year. Agarkar stated, “He led a team (IPL) to a title, and his personal performance was also good. In my opinion, he was very close to the World Cup squad and was a 'stand-out candidate'.” Both his leadership qualities and individual performance have made him suitable for this important role.
On the other hand, Suryakumar Yadav has lost his captaincy due to poor form, despite having won the T20 World Cup title at home just three months ago. The 35-year-old batsman scored only 242 runs in 9 innings in the T20 World Cup, with an unbeaten 84 against the USA being his only notable performance. His recent form has forced the selectors to make this difficult decision.
Playing for Mumbai Indians in the IPL, he accumulated only 270 runs in 13 innings, with an average of 20.76. His team finished second-lowest in the league table. Agarkar described the decision as “tough,” stating, “It's difficult to make such a decision right after winning a World Cup, but it often happens after most World Cups; we try to find our best path forward. We felt this was the best way.”
India will play two T20 international matches against Ireland later this month, followed by a five-match series against England in July. The BCCI has also announced the squad for the men's cricket competition at this year's Asian Games, to be held in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, which includes experienced bowler Jasprit Bumrah. The men's cricket competition at the Asian Games will commence on September 24, marking another important event in the Indian cricket calendar.
